IEEE Draft Guide for Stray Current Corrosion Mitigation for Direct Current (DC) Rail Transit Systems

Summary

New IEEE Standard - Active - Draft.
The stray current corrosion issues associated with dc rail transit systems are well documented. However, there is a need for a concise guide document that can be used by transit agencies as a framework for initially designing systems and for the ongoing maintenance of those systems. This guide will assist transit agencies in the establishment of key processes as well as design and maintenance requirements for the mitigation of stray current effects on new and existing dc rail transit systems. The Guide will serve as a knowledge base for transit engineering personnel to reduce stray current problems and to take appropriate proactive measures.

This guide provides principles, techniques and data for the engineering design, installation, commissioning, monitoring and testing as well as control and mitigation methods for stray currents associated with DC Rail Transit Systems. The principles associated with this guide are applicable to both transit and non-transit structures alike and should take into account any structure that can be impacted by the generation of DC stray current.
The purpose of this guide is to assist transit agencies in the establishment of key processes as well as design and maintenance requirements for the mitigation of stray current effects on new and existing DC rail transit systems. The guide provides a knowledge base for transit engineering personnel to avoid DC stray current problems and to take appropriate proactive measures
