IEEE Draft Standard for Unique IDs and Smart Tags for Supply Chain and Asset Traceability for the Electric Grid

Summary

New IEEE Standard - Active - Draft.
The transmission and distribution electric grid supply chain is expected to be improved through the implementation of a “digital thread” system in which asset attribute data is exchanged with supply chain partners in a digital format based on industry standards. This goal is achieved in the Supply Chain and Asset Traceability for the Electric Grid (SCATE) system defined in this standard through the use of industry-standard Unique IDs and Smart Tags (barcodes, RFID).

This standard addresses unique identification numbers for electric grid assets including generation, transmission, substation, distribution, storage, and electric vehicle charging stations. The unique identifiers include a universal catalog identifier, manufacturer identifier, and traceability identifier.
The purpose of this standard is to provide a method for manufacturers to generate Unique IDs and apply Smart Tags that can be scanned and decoded by stakeholders along the supply chain.
