This document provides recommendations for evaluating the result of human translation, post-edited machine translation and unedited machine translation. It also gives recommendations regarding the qualifications and skills of evaluators. The role of sampling is also discussed. This paper focuses on an analytical approach to translation evaluation using error types and penalty points configured to obtain an error score and quality rating. It also focuses only on human evaluation of the translation result. This document follows an approach designed to have as little complexity as possible. The aim of this approach is to ensure that this document is applicable to as many users as possible in the translation sector. The recommendations provided in this document can also be used in the evaluation of source texts intended for translation. This document applies to translation service providers (TSPs), including independent translators, translation companies or in-house translation services, their clients and other interested parties in the translation industry, such as educational and training establishments for translators. This document does not apply to related elements such as translation output quality assurance processes and corrective actions. This document does not apply to interpretation.
