This method is a standardized system for the description, on a numerical basis, of the condition of an engine or engine component in terms of: the accumulation of deposits; the degradation of the surface due to mechanical action or chemical attack; and the functional state of the component, e.g. ring sticking.

Wear is not assessed by the method, as this phenomenon is generally subject to direct measurement.
