Intake System Icing Test Procedures

Summary

These procedures may be used to establish the intake icing tendency of a particular vehicle design or modification, or to judge the effectiveness of different gasolines, in avoiding icing problems. They are suitable for either road or climatic chamber use, the latter providing a controlled environment: cruise icing which can cause loss of power and eventual stalling during cruise conditions; urban driving icing which can cause stalling and can influence idle speed during the first few minutes of city type driving; and idle icing which can occur during prolonged idle after a cold start and causes stalling of the engine.

These procedures are applicable only to carburetted and fuel injection vehicles where the gasoline comes into contact with those parts of the intake system where ice formation can occur and cause malfunctions.
