Hazards may ensue from work in laboratories, which have to be reduced or controlled by technical and organisational means. The main solution for coping with potential hazards are ventilation safety devices, e.g. fume cupboards. The standard deals exclusively with technical aspects of ventilation in laboratories and buildings containing laboratories. It addresses, as an aid to the planning and execution, building owners, architects, planners, installation manufacturers, equipment suppliers, authorities, user, facility service providers, maintenance service providers, experts, accident insurance companies, etc. Depending on the specific application (such as biological, chemical or radiological laboratory), further regulations may stipulate additional or different requirements.
