Particulate matter measurement - Dust measurement in flowing gases - Measurement of emissions of crystalline silicon dioxide in the PM<(Index)4>-fraction

Summary

The standard specifies the reference method for the determination of the mass concentration of crystalline silicon dioxide in the form of quartz and cristobalite in the PM4 fraction at ducted stationary sources. The measurement method is based on sampling by the impaction method and determination of the mass of crystalline silicon dioxide in a subsequent analytical step. Quartz in the form of particulate matter PM4 has to be allocated to the class of carcinogenic materials in the technical instruction on air (TA Luft). Therefore, quartz emissions in the form of fine particles PM4 shall not exceed a specified mass flow or a specified mass concentration. The measurement method described in the standard allows the quantification of quartz emissions in form of fine particles PM4 and thereby the check of compliance with corresponding limit values. The standard does not include the gravimetric determination of the PM4 fraction. The method described in the standard may not be used for the determination of the total mass concentration of dust. The standard is not applicable in case of waste gas saturated with water-vapour. The standard is addressed to test laboratories performing measurements of quartz emissions in form of fine particles PM4, to manufacturers of corresponding measuring systems, to competent authorities and to research facilities active in this field.
