This guideline describes the present state of technology in plants for the smelting of aluminium, inclusive of upstream processes for the pretreatment of metalcontaining feedstock (input material). This guideline also deals with aspects of the further use of by-products, the avoidance/reduction of solid waste and waste water, and the exploitation of waste heat. The guideline covers smelting plants in which aluminium alloys are produced and employed.
