The standard describes a method for the thermographic determination of elemental carbon in atmospheric particles. It defines conditions for the measurement at traffic-sites. The method described can also be applied at other types of sites, but the possibility of artefacts (for example, by an increased proportion of organic carbon) must be considered. The standard defines both the filter material and the temperature program to be used for the separation between organic carbon and elemental carbon in the analysis. The standard does not address the actual sampling, which must be performed according to DIN EN 12341.
