This guideline is designed as an aid for the organisation and operation of general goods warehouses. It deals with the organisation particularly in terms of the data flow. Only normal sequences are represented. Special sequences and faults due to technical or organisational defects and the measures necessary to deal with them are not described due to their being so diverse. In concrete planning, however, special attention must be given to these situations. A warehouse system cannot be seen in isolation. The warehouse must be co-ordinated in terms of organisation and technology, upstream and downstream systems and the overall logistic structure of the company from acquisition to sales. On this basis the basic organisational functions described can also be applied in upstream or downstream areas.
