Survey and monitoring of trees and forest stands by means of aerial photos - Design and procedure of digital image surveys

Summary

Aerial images have proven valuable regarding the status documentation of forests and vegetation stands and the monitoring of status changes. The standard defines quality requirements for the procedure of respective digital image surveys, which aim on the determination of broad information on degree and spatial distribution of damages on forest trees and stands. In particular, the standard specifies the technical requirements on digital aerial image cameras, the design and procedure of digital image surveys and the approval and storage of aerial image data. Only calibrated, geometrical high-precision, large- and medium-sized matrix cameras as well as line scan cameras are covered. The standard addresses experts and practitioners, which are in charge of inventory tasks in forests supported by aerial images. It applies to public and private forest administrations, environmental and planning authorities and service providers in the areas forest inventory, vegetation mapping and landscape ecology. Generally, the standard's requirements are also applicable to wood formations outside the forest, e.g. tree stands in towns or orchards.
