In the series of standards VDI 3954 the characteristics of test dusts for the use in technical product testing are described in a meaningful manner. In order to determine the effects of dusts on technical products, an extensive knowledge of the profile of these particle fractions is absolutely essential. The test dusts described here are especially used for filter testing and product qualification in environmental simulation. In order to be able to carry out such tests with reproducible and repeatable results, the test dusts must have a unique property profile and comply certain quality criteria. To begin with, this standard presents fundamental test-dust-specific properties as well as the resulting effects of the test dusts. Critical aspects of health and safety are also discussed. The application of the series of standards VDI 3954 helps to assign characteristics of test dusts defined effects to the respective product as well as related application possibilities.
