In multistep automatized mechanical manufacturing it is difficult to obtain submicron manufacturing accuracy as the workpiece has to be aligned precisely in each manufacturing step. Highly accurate pallettisation systems with precision chucks can achieve the necessary accuracy with passive alignment. The guideline shows the principles of ultraprecision alignment. Especially elastic averaging and a corresponding system example are explained. Recommendations for use in manufacturing practice are also given.
