Safeguarding of industrial process plants by means of process control engineering (PCE) - Application of functional safety in the context of explosion protection
Summary
An important application where functional safety might be used is explosion protection. In this field a different concept has been used for decades which assures a safe operation and does require neither additional instrumented functions nor additional safety instrumented functions. In a few cases, depending on specific requirements of the specific application, measures of explosion proof installation are not sufficient and additional instrumented functions or safety instrumented functions are needed. Furthermore, some suppliers or standards require use of ""SIL-certified"" devices for the use with some devices. This guideline discusses these issues and shows guidelines where additional instrumented functions in which quality are needed and how to realize these functions. The principles discussed here are not limited to process industry; they can also be used for explosion protection in other industries.
