Testing of connectorised and non-connectorised polymer optical fibres - Power budget
Summary
Polymer optical fibres (POF) are used for data transmission. Industrial automation and vehicle applications use them to a larger scale. During assembly, installation and operation of polymer optical fibres accompanying tests are necessary for quality assurance. The series of standards VDI/VDE 5570 helps to improve the quality of tests and measurements on polymer optical fibres by enabling better reproducibility and comparability of results. This standard describes power budgets of polymer optical fibres and optical transmission lines equipped with POF. Besides the properties of POF the described power budgets take transmitter, plugs, and receiver characteristics into account. Spectral properties are considered as well as temperature dependencies and ageing effects. Using power budgets systems with sufficient buffer ensures reliable operation exceeding the intended operational use time. Thus, this standard is a guide for choosing suitable polymer optical fibres and other components in optical transmission lines.
