The quality criteria of machined surfaces of wood and wood-based materials usually are less oriented to their functional performance. The focus is directed to aesthetics or appearance which are often a critical factor in purchasing decisions made by the customer. In the case of wood and wood-based material surfaces, therefore, quality assurance measures for technical surfaces and the associated standards often do not apply or are not applicable. The standard specifies characteristics of wood and wood-based material surfaces and their desired texture. The Annex of the standard provides examples with images and roughness parameters. Therewith, the standard is a fundamental base for quality assurance in woodworking.
