The quality criteria of machined surfaces of wood and wood-based materials usually are less oriented to their functional performance. The focus is directed to aesthetics or appearance which are often a critical factor in purchasing decisions made by the customer. In the case of wood and wood-based material surfaces, therefore, quality assurance measures for technical surfaces and the associated standards often do not apply or are not applicable. This standard presents appropriate measurement and testing methods for the assessment of wood and wood-based material surfaces. The scope ranges from simple craft tools beyond methodological sensory analysis up to the application of roughness measurement techniques and further specific measurement methods. Recommendations are given on which measurement and testing methods are suitable for the characteristics and materials given in VDI 3414 Part 1.
