The quality criteria of machined surfaces of wood and wood-based materials usually are less oriented to their functional performance. The focus is directed to aesthetics or appearance which are often a critical factor in purchasing decisions made by the customer. In the case of wood and wood-based material surfaces, therefore, quality assurance measures for technical surfaces and the associated standards often do not apply or are not applicable. Analogous to VDI 3414 Part 3 this standard addresses the specifics for grinding. Specific characteristics are designated and possible texture properties or specifications for selected manufacturing processes are presented.
